The UK Blog Awards was a major event and I was humbled to be a top 10 contender for 2 years in a row.
I started blogging many, many moons ago for the sole reason of sharing fun stories from the road.
I wanted to tell my experiences, lessons learned and keep my family updated on my whereabouts (always an issue).
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my silly stories would ever be nominated for any kind of awards. No promotion, no social sharing… just write, release and move on.
Ah… the good old days.
It turned out that people liked my stuff. Lots of people.
Being nominated for the first award was amazing. Finding myself in the top 10 was unbelievable.
Finding myself in the top 10 for two years in a row was even better.
In hindsight, I would have loved to capitalise on these awards, the exposure and the benefits that come from being a two-time top 10 UK Blog Award nominee. Sadly I didn’t. I was too inexperienced and immature, and so I let these slip.
While it took me a long time to learn this lesson, I believe it ultimately made me a better writer. It also helped ignite my passion for SEO and marketing. While I’ve not mastered these, it’s something I’m still just as passionate about today.
Will I ever be nominated again for an award? Who knows? I don’t write with this mindset. If people like the content I produce, amazing. If not, I won’t lose sleep.
One piece of advice though. If you ever get nominated for anything, embrace the moment. Learn from it, network like a lunatic and use the exposure as a springboard to bigger and better things.
